European style vivariums.

I’ve had a recent enfatuation with European style vivariums. Purpose built for dart frogs and other small herps, they really add a professional touch to any display area. Designed in the Netherlands and Germany, they’ve become the staple much as 10 gallon verts are in the US. Right now I’m working on finding a cheap solution to getting the design here in the United States. I think the best thing is to build your own, which I’m doing but it’s taking a while to get completed.

Hello all!

Vivarium fauna.

Though there are a bunch of different vivarium subjects, the animal I’ve taken a fancy to are poison dart frogs. Now poison dart frogs (family dendrobatidae) are a group of small animals from South and Central America best known for their toxicity and brilliant coloring. Their common name is derived from local natives using the frogs to make poison darts for hunting. However, this is only documented in the most toxic poison dart frog, Phyllobates Terribilis, the most toxic amphibian and one of the most toxic animals in the world. Though other species do have toxins, only a handful can kill a human.

Luckily, poison dart frogs are not toxic in captivity! This, along with being active during the day, small size, and bright colors make them excellent terrarium subjects. Now that I’ve somewhat convinced you that dart frogs are great to keep in terrariums, I hope that you will consider them!
